Breast Reconstruction Overview

Breast Reconstruction

Breast Reconstruction is a process, whether following removal of a breast to treat breast cancer or as treatment for other disorders, it involves several steps and stages. Reconstruction can begin immediately after breast removal, performed under the same anesthesia, or it can be delayed for months to years. Revision Breast Reconstruction may be done to correct disappointing results from a previous reconstructive breast surgery. Bottom line is…you have options and the timing is your choice.

Dr. Rudderman works closely with your Oncologist throughout the process and before the reconstructive surgery process begins. Dr. Rudderman has great expertise in Breast Reconstruction with Implants. This option usually begins at the time of the mastectomy…when Tissue Expanders are put into place in preparation for Breast Implants.

Tissue Expansion Process

This process can begin immediately after your mastectomy or later at the time of your choosing. Tissue expansion goes like this:

  1. Insertion of the expander device into the breast area
  2. After healing from surgery is complete…expansion begins
  3. The process is a brief, painless office procedure that involves: inserting a needle into the expander’s magnetized locator to add saline to the expander. This is done gradually over a few weeks allowing for slow, painless expansion of your breast tissues.
  4. You return to normal activities immediately after each injection
  5. When tissue is adequately expanded…implant placement is done
Other Techniques to Restore a Natural Looking Breast

After some time has passed, women realize that their body has also changed more. There are other procedures chosen by hundreds of thousands of women each year to restore their body to a more natural, beautiful looking one. Women also opt to have:

  • Breast Implant Surgery…to achieve balance in both breasts
  • Fat Grafting to help create/restore a natural breast form
  • Breast Lift Surgery to restore symmetry and a more youthful look
  • Breast Nipple Reconstruction and Areolar Reconstruction
  • Other Restorative, Age defying…Beautifying procedures

Dr. Rudderman gently guides you through each stage of breast reconstruction to eliminate confusion and frustration…because during the process you realize how your body has changed but you also see the tremendous benefits of the procedures being offered.

Breast Reconstruction FAQ’s

Will I experience pain every time the Tissue Expander fluid is increased?

Most women experience some discomfort, but no one complains about pain. We do this very gradually to allow your skin tissue to stretch slowly over time.

What Hospital does Dr. Rudderman use to perform Breast Reconstruction surgery?

Northside Hospital is the primary choice for Breast surgeries in the Atlanta area. Their Breast Care Program is second to none nationwide with all the most advanced technology and systems available anywhere.

What do women do about the other breast after Unilateral Mastectomy?

Dr. Rudderman’s goal in all reconstructive surgeries is to achieve symmetry outcomes that look as natural as possible. Many women choose other procedures to make the unoperated breast as symmetric with your newly reconstructed breast as possible.

How much lost work time is involved with Breast Reconstruction surgery?

Most of Dr. Rudderman’s patients take anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks off work to allow for follow up treatments, appointments and recovery.

What is the importance of Tissue Implant Expanders?

Tissue expanders are “temporary” breast implants that serve as “place savers.” After a mastectomy, these prepare your body for permanent breast implants at a later date.

Does Insurance pay for Breast Reconstruction Surgery?

YES. Federal Law today mandates that all insurance providers pay for breast reconstruction procedures if a mastectomy was required. Many times they will also cover revision surgery. You will need to check with your own insurance provider for complete information.

Is Breast Reconstruction Surgery the right option for me?

Breast Reconstruction is not the right choice for every woman. Some women decide to use prosthetics the rest of their lives, while a great many more want to have real breast forms made from their own living tissue. More women, every year, are choosing to have Breast Reconstruction Surgery because of the many positive benefits. Prophylactic Mastectomy is chosen more often than not, for those at risk for BRCA1 and BRCA2, to gain peace of mind by eliminating the risk of cancer in the opposite breast. Information today is more abundant than ever, and Dr. Rudderman has helped guide hundreds of women through this difficult maze. He helps you clearly understand…so the choice can clearly be yours.

Delayed and Immediate Breast Reconstruction…what is the difference?

Immediate Breast Reconstruction begins immediately after mastectomy of procedure for cancer treatment. Delayed reconstruction begins days, weeks or months later at the time of your choosing.

Is Immediate Breast Reconstruction a better choice?

The benefits to having immediate versus delayed breast reconstruction are clear: immediate breast reconstruction means you wake up whole and minimizes the overall number of surgeries. Better cosmetic results are often achieved with immediate reconstruction, and women tell me that the psychological benefits are huge.

What’s the time frame involved in Tissue Expansion?

Every person is different, so times vary patient by patient. The best answer is: tissue expansion is complete when your skin has stretched enough to allow for permanent breast implants to be inserted.

If I must have Chemotherapy, will Breast Implants still be an option?

Yes, chemotherapy patients can have breast implants after post mastectomy treatment. Dr. Rudderman will work closely with your Oncology doctor to determine the right time to do implants and to schedule your appointments.

Can all women have Immediate Breast Reconstruction?

The vast majority of women are good candidates for immediate breast reconstruction. There are several reconstructive options and you may be a candidate for all or just some of them. This is determined during your consultation with Dr. Rudderman.

When my Breast Reconstruction is complete, can I choose my breast size?

Absolutely! Based upon the reconstruction technique, you will have options and help decide the appropriate breast size to match your frame, to achieve symmetry, balance and a natural, pleasing look.

How often are Tissue Expander Fills appointments scheduled?

Your appointments will be done 2 to 3 weeks apart based upon your comfort level, radiation treatments and other factors.

  • Dr. Rudderman and his staff made the experience easy and comfortable. They were realistic communicating surgery expectations, expected pain levels and down time from work. Nurses were informative and friendly and wait times minimal. I also liked the fact that Dr. Rudderman does all his own work and doesn't let other less experienced people do parts of the surgery the way other doctors may. I'm only one week out of the surgery, but I am very satisfied with the results so far.
