What Is a Breast Lift with Implants?

A breast lift is a cosmetic surgical procedure that lifts and reshapes the breasts to improve positioning, symmetry, and balance. Breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure designed to enhance the size, shape, and symmetry of the breasts by inserting implants to restore breast fullness.

Many women find that they can achieve the volume and appearance they want by reshaping and lifting the tissue they already have without a breast implant. During your consultation, options will be discussed, including breast lift alone, breast lift with implants, or breast lift (followed by a secondary future procedure of breast augmentation, depending on the amount of breast droop, the volume of breast tissue, and the patient’s desire for the most natural long-term result.

There are many advantages to using your own tissue to achieve a result without devices. There are those patients with significant droop due to stretchy skin that would benefit from a staged operation, meaning performing a lift first to reposition the breast, and returning in 4-6 months for a second procedure to add an implant. This option can provide the added benefit of potentially more stable breasts long-term and a greater ability to accurately select the best implant for size. There are also patients who find that after a lift alone, they are comfortable and satisfied with their volume and appearance and do not require a breast implant.

A detailed consultation will provide a series of options for your consideration and advice that fits your needs and expectations.

The combination of a breast lift and breast augmentation can:

  • Enhance breast size for overall balance and harmony
  • Lift breasts to address sagging and positioning
  • Restores shape, position, and fullness
  • Allows women the opportunity to redefine their ideal shape and enhance their natural form

Breast lift with implants surgery is designed to:

  • Elevate breast tissue and place volume in a higher, more flattering position
  • Remove excess skin and tighten tissue for long-lasting support
  • Reduce and reshape the areola for improved balance
  • Enhance the size and shape of your breasts for improved fullness
  • Reposition the nipple while helping to maintain sensation and breastfeeding potential
  • Improve breast symmetry, creating a more proportionate, balanced appearance

A breast lift with implants helps women feel amazing in their bodies, wear the clothing they want without frustration, and live their lives on their own terms. What you want from your body and expression of femininity are unique and deeply personal. Dr. Rudderman approaches each breast procedure with curiosity and creativity; this is your transformation.

Why Should You Choose Dr. Randy Rudderman for Your Breast Lift with Implants Surgery?

Having been in practice since 1989, Dr. Rudderman offers his patients a wealth of information and expertise that only experience can provide. For every treatment he performs, he incorporates effective and predictable surgical techniques that are employed with an uncompromising respect for the natural human form. He understands that all bodies change and that our desires and preferences do too.

Dr. Rudderman has a collaborative relationship with the fashion industry and understands how clothing and plastic surgery share a purpose: to modify, conceal, and accentuate. While not every patient may have a keen interest in fashion, his understanding of how these two fields work in harmony allows him to approach his surgical plans in a way that is both sensitive to cultural norms while celebrating the patient’s natural beauty. A treatment plan designed by Dr. Rudderman will always factor in a patient’s desires, natural frame, genetics, lifestyle, and fashion culture.

What Does Dr. Rudderman Do that Allows for Better Potential Outcomes?

What technically contributes to more predictable long-term results? Why does the approach to treatment matter?

Treatment selection for breast lift/breast augmentation is complex and requires consideration of a variety of surgical techniques. Success depends on awareness and careful assessment, then treatment of multiple factors, including soft tissue characteristics (volume, droop, and skin characteristics), life events (age, pregnancy, or specific health conditions), activity requirements, assessment of symptoms, and personal desires for outcome.

Developing a plan is not trivial, particularly one that clearly describes potential risk and both short- and long-term considerations for results. Our approach includes critical evaluation of your anatomy and attention to detail of matching the technical aspect of surgery to the specifics of clinical findings, and your desires for the outcome.

Selection of the specific approach used requires experience, judgement, technical skill, and artistry. The choices made impact long-term shape, potential need for additional surgery, and both appearance stability and clinical and financial future risks. The goal is to select an approach that provides a higher probability of a predictable long-term outcome.

What Are My Implant Options?

Implant Types

Material

Implants are all made of a silicone shell and may be filled with:

  • Saline (saltwater): Fully adjustable
  • Silicone gel: Filled with soft silicone for a natural look and feel. Most current silicone gel implants are all cohesive gel (previously referred to as “gummy bear” implants) and come in a variety of “firmness,” depending on your soft tissue characteristics and aesthetic desires. These implants are more likely to maintain breast shape even with small breaks (fractures) of the implant shell.

Shape

Implants are available with different profiles, or projections, ranging from a low profile, or flatter implant, to a high profile, or an implant with a very prominent height. Lower and moderate profile implants often result in a very balanced and natural appearance. Implants used by our practice are smooth surface implants.

Implant Position

Breast implants can be placed either above or below the pectoral muscle. Dr. Rudderman will make the best recommendation for you based on the volume and consistency of your breast tissue and your desired outcome.

  • Subglandular (above the muscle): Subglandular (above the muscle, below the breast tissue) implant position category, or a sub-fascial approach (above the muscle but below the fascia -tissue covering the pectoral muscle surface).
  • Submuscular (below the muscle): Submuscular implant position category can include a dual plane technique as well.

The positioning of the implant pocket will depend on your current anatomy, breast volume, skin and soft tissue characteristics, lifestyle and activity, and desire for achieved post-operative appearance.

Submuscular placement is the option Dr. Rudderman most often recommends, but he will discuss the benefits and considerations of each during your consultation.

Incision Placement

Incision selection for surgery involving a breast lift/breast augmentation potential combination requires a significantly different thought process than breast augmentation alone. While breast augmentation involves a short incision, most commonly in the breast crease or fold, breast lifts typically include incisions around the areolar margin, from the areola to the inframammary fold (breast crease), and along the inframammary fold. When a full lift is required, with or without an implant, no new incision is needed for the breast implant insertion, and the breast lift incision is used for access. Even if a lift has been performed initially, the second surgery typically uses prior incisions to place the implant.

Dr. Rudderman most commonly uses the inframammary crease incision for implant placement alone. This incision tends to heal well and creates a low risk for scar revision, minimal visibility, and allows for access to the appropriate breast implant pocket, preserving breast tissue (with minimal impact to the actual breast tissue). There is evidence that suggests this approach may have a reduced risk of long-term complications, including capsular contracture and implant displacement. If a secondary operation is performed after the lift, an inframammary incision approach remains a predictable approach with relatively low risk. During your consultation, Dr. Rudderman will recommend the appropriate approach for you and your goals.

How Do I Choose the Right Implants?

Implants don’t have to be extreme to be extremely effective. During your consultation, you and Dr. Rudderman will discuss your implant options and choose the best implant for you based on:

  • Your anatomy and body type/proportions
  • The specific characteristics of your tissue, including volume, symmetry, and chest wall shape
  • Desired appearance outcomes
  • Current and preferred lifestyle

The breast implant options available can feel overwhelming, but with the right surgeon, thorough education, and a candid discussion about your goals, the decision-making process can be much easier and less stressful than it may seem at first. Dr. Rudderman is committed to ensuring you have every bit of information you need to make a choice about your appearance and health that serves you today and decades down the road.

How Do I Know a Breast Lift with Augmentation Is Right for Me?

Breast lift and breast augmentation procedures are some of the most common procedures we do, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that a combination procedure is the right option for you. Oftentimes, women have enough breast tissue to achieve the volume they want without implants. After the breast tissue is lifted and reshaped, your breasts will appear fuller. Following a breast lift, women who still want increased volume generally end up choosing a smaller implant than they would have initially.

If you are bothered by the size, shape, position, symmetry, or projection of your breasts and want to feel comfortable in your body, in your clothes, and during your daily life, scheduling a consultation is the best way to determine whether a breast lift with augmentation is right for you.

How Should I Prepare for Breast Lift with Augmentation Surgery?

Preparing for breast lift with implants surgery in Alpharetta involves a few steps, but in general, you should:

  • Prioritize nutrition: It can be helpful to prepare balanced, nutritious meals or arrange for a meal delivery service. During recovery, getting optimal nutrition is essential to ensure your body has everything it needs to heal.
  • Plan for help: You may need to arrange childcare, pet care, or help around the house during your immediate recovery. Plan for 3-4 days of help with children and household tasks.
  • Medical review: Dr. Rudderman may recommend running routine medical tests to ensure you are healthy enough for surgery. These tests may include routine blood tests, an EKG, or a mammogram.
  • Consider your medication: During your consultation, Dr. Rudderman will review your medications, vitamins, and supplements. You may need to discontinue anything that increases the risk of bleeding or bruising for 2 weeks before and after surgery, including fish oil, garlic, ginseng, vitamin E, Ibuprofen, or other anti-inflammatory medications.
  • Quit smoking: Nicotine negatively impacts healing and can increase your risk of complications. Dr. Rudderman recommends that all patients discontinue nicotine use at least 4 weeks prior to and following surgery to help ensure optimal outcomes and the best possible recovery.
  • Focus on a healthy lifestyle: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is one of the best things you can do to prepare for any surgery. Develop or continue a sustainable exercise routine that will support a stable weight, long-term health, and a higher probability of a smooth recovery.
  • Drink plenty of water: Staying hydrated is essential to your recovery. Drink plenty of water during the days leading up to your surgery to support recovery.
  • Get excited: Your breast lift with implants surgery is an investment in your quality of life. Get excited about who you will be, what you will wear, and what you will get to do once you have fully recovered. Reclaiming your body and self-confidence is always something to be proud of.

How Is Breast Lift with Implants Surgery in Alpharetta, GA Performed?

Breast lift with augmentation procedures take place in a fully accredited surgical center with state-of-the-art technology, hospital-level safety standards, and an experienced medical team dedicated to your care. Additionally, Dr. Rudderman takes pride in performing every single aspect of your surgery himself. As you go into surgery, you can feel confident knowing you are being cared for by the most qualified professionals available at every step of the process.

1. Day of Surgery Prep

On the day of your surgery, you will arrive at the surgical center and meet with Dr. Rudderman to review your treatment plan and ask any last-minute questions you may have. He will then mark your breasts for surgery, and you will meet with a board-certified anesthesiologist.

2. Incisions

When you are sedated and prepped in the surgical suite, Dr. Rudderman will make the appropriate incisions to access the underlying breast tissue and pocket.

3. Implant placement

Once he has access, Dr. Rudderman will lift the tissue, tighten the skin, and reposition the nipple for a natural, balanced appearance. It is important to note that the nipple will remain attached to the underlying ducts and nerves during surgery. Dr. Rudderman will use the “no-touch” technique to insert the implant in the appropriate location.

4. Closing your incision

After surgery is complete, Dr. Rudderman will close your incisions with sutures, apply a light surgical dressing, and fit you with a compression bra to ease the pressure on your incisions and support your new breasts. Dr. Rudderman’s delicate approach to tissue care and suturing helps promote optimal healing of the breast tissue and incisions.

Most breast lift with implants procedures take 2.5 to 4 hours and are performed on an outpatient basis. The operation and artistry involved in breast lift with augmentation procedures are specific to each woman. During your consultation, you will receive extensive education regarding your condition, your concerns, your options, your risks and benefits, and your probable outcome. The goal of every procedure is a safe surgery, excellent appearance, normal anatomic redistribution, and an outcome that lasts for years and ages appropriately.

What Should I Expect After Breast Lift with Implants Surgery?

Immediately after surgery, you will be wearing a surgical dressing and a bra. As you will have been put under anesthesia, you will need a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for at least 24 hours.

In general, you can expect the following during your Atlanta breast lift recovery:

Physical recovery:

  • You can expect mild swelling, tightness, and some discomfort. Dr. Rudderman will prescribe pain medication for comfort management, but this should resolve on its own. After 24-48 hours, you should be able to manage discomfort with over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen.
  • Swelling is generally mild and resolves on its own in 2-3 weeks.
  • Sutures are absorbable and do not need to be removed.
  • You will have a type of brown paper tape on the incisions to protect the area and help with minimal scar formation.
  • You may have a drain tube placed that needs to be checked several times a day. This drain is commonly removed in 24 hours during your first follow-up visit.

 Return to normal activities:

  • Most patients can return to desk work in 3 to 4 days. If your job requires physical activity, you may need to take more time off or request modified duties while you recover.
  • Women with children often can return to full childcare within reason in 3 to 4 days, including carpool and driving.
  • Avoid strenuous activity for 3 weeks or until Dr. Rudderman has cleared you to do so. At 3 months, you will be able to participate in full aerobic exercise.

Post-Surgical Follow-up Visits:

  • You will be seen in the office 24 hours post-surgery and given a more comfortable bra.
  • Regular follow-up appointments will be scheduled for:
    • One week post op
    • 2 weeks later (Three weeks post op)
    • One month later (7-8 weeks post op)
    • Three months later (6 months post op)

Follow-up appointments are essential to ensure you’re healing as expected and are satisfied with your natural, age-appropriate results.

Atlanta Breast Lift with Implants FAQs

If you come in looking for a breast lift with implants, Dr. Rudderman will likely recommend doing your treatment in two separate surgeries. When a breast lift with implants is performed in a single surgery, Dr. Rudderman cannot remove the same amount of skin as he would with breast lift surgery alone. That means that the tissue surrounding the implant will not be as tight, and the probability of sagging is greater. By doing a breast lift, letting your body heal and settle, and then adding implants, you increase long-term outcomes and get to take the time to decide whether implants are actually necessary. After the breast tissue is reshaped and lifted, many women end up realizing they had enough volume all along.

Overwhelmingly, the answer to whether implants are safe is yes. That said, there are safety considerations that should be discussed.

  • At present, there are no reported cases of breast cancer associated with implants. There is an extremely rare association between textured implants and a specific type of highly curable lymphoma. At Dr. Rudderman Plastic Surgery and Medical Spa, we use smooth implants exclusively.
  • Many patients live with their implants for decades without issue.
  • Breast implant illness is possible. Unfortunately, there is no material that can be transplanted into the body that is fully inert. Because of the nature of implanting a foreign object or tissue, there is always a possibility of reaction. If this does happen to you, symptoms often resolve with the removal of the implants.

It is important to note that implants are not lifetime devices. At some point, you will need breast revision surgery. You can expect your implants to last between 10 and 20 years or longer, but you should expect to need to remove or replace them eventually.

Some women choose to replace their implants before they have to because of lifestyle, preference, or breast tissue changes. Other common reasons for implant revision include:

  • Capsular contracture (hardening of breast tissue)
  • Breast shape changes due to aging, pregnancy, or weight fluctuation
  • Desire for a different implant size or removal altogether
  • Suspected implant rupture seen on mammogram or MRI

Dr. Rudderman is highly experienced in implant removal, replacement, and revision surgeries, helping women achieve safe and natural outcomes even after many years.

Not everyone needs implants with a breast lift. However, if you are looking for additional volume and a more uplifted appearance and position on the chest wall, a breast lift with implants is what you need to achieve your goals.

No surgery is magic, but achieving improved breast symmetry and size can result in increased comfort and confidence in and out of clothing. Once he fully understands your aesthetic and lifestyle goals, Dr. Rudderman will be able to help you decide whether this combination treatment is right for you.

In breast lift with implants procedures, the superficial skin and soft tissue are elevated, allowing for the breast tissue to be reshaped to a more normal anatomic appearance, including often repositioning on the chest wall and using an implant to replace or restore lost breast volume, achieving a fuller, more symmetrical look. This is accomplished by understanding and achieving the best possible balance between several factors, including:

  • Current and desired breast volume
  • Skin and soft tissue
  • Nipple and areolar size and position
  • Your height, shape, weight, age, lifestyle, and desires for surgery
  • The contour of your chest wall and chest wall muscles, including the pectoral muscle, the contour, and position of your ribs and chest bone

With these considerations in mind, Dr. Rudderman carefully plans out your unique surgical plan to give you the best result possible.

No. The nipple and areola remain connected to breast tissue and nerves. This technique helps preserve sensation and, in some cases, the ability to breastfeed. Permanent loss of nipple sensitivity is rare.

Most patients resume light activity in about 3 weeks, depending on healing progress. Dr. Rudderman and his team will monitor your recovery and guide you safely back into exercise routines.

Most patients return to desk jobs in about 4 days. For example, women who have surgery on Thursday are often back to work on Monday. If drains are used, they are usually removed in 1–2 days.

No. A breast lift is considered a cosmetic procedure, and insurance does not cover it.

Yes. We offer financing through CareCredit and other options, making breast lift surgery more accessible.

Yes. You’ll need a responsible adult to drive you home after surgery and stay with you overnight. If you have small children or pets, you will need assistance for the first few days.

Results are long-lasting, often lasting many years. Natural relaxation occurs over time with aging and lifestyle, but most women enjoy the benefits of their lift for a decade or longer, while their implants will need to be replaced between 10 and 20 years after initial surgery. Revisions can be done later if desired.

Yes, he performs all his patient’s surgeries. Many surgeons use assistants to suture or perform part of the operations. Dr. Rudderman performs the entire operation on every patient.

Yes. All cases are supervised by a board-certified medical doctor who specializes in anesthesiology.
