What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction, also called suction-assisted lipectomy, is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to remove stubborn fat deposits from specific areas of the body to improve contour and proportion. This body sculpting technique can address concerns related to genetic fat distribution, post-pregnancy changes, weight fluctuations, or areas resistant to diet and exercise.

Liposuction surgery is intended to:

  • Remove localized fat deposits for a more contoured appearance
  • Create a more proportionate, balanced figure
  • Enhance body definition and improve overall silhouette
  • Target specific problem areas like the abdomen, thighs, arms, flanks, or chin
  • Refine and sculpt areas that don’t respond to traditional weight loss methods

While some clothing styles help to reduce otherwise visible bulges, other clothing styles accentuate these areas. Many people diligently strive to maintain a healthy lifestyle through good nutrition, proper hydration, and the right workout program. In spite of it all, those unwelcome stubborn areas simply do not respond to even the most diligent diet and exercise. Often, people develop these problem areas during puberty or in their early 20s, during pregnancy, or as a natural result of aging. Oftentimes, women express that their weight really hasn’t changed much, but that their overall shape has changed. Liposuction is a great solution for many people who want to refine their natural figure and accentuate their natural curves.

Why Should You Choose Dr. Randy Rudderman for Your Liposuction?

Having been in practice since 1989, Dr. Rudderman offers his patients a wealth of information and expertise that only experience can provide. For every treatment he performs, he incorporates effective and predictable surgical techniques that are employed with an uncompromising respect for the natural human form. He understands that all bodies change and that our desires and preferences do too.

Dr. Rudderman has a collaborative relationship with the fashion industry and understands how clothing and plastic surgery share a purpose: to modify, conceal, and accentuate. While not every patient may have a keen interest in fashion, his understanding of how these two fields work in harmony allows him to approach his surgical plans in a way that is both sensitive to cultural norms while celebrating the patient’s natural beauty. A treatment plan designed by Dr. Rudderman will always factor in a patient’s desires, natural frame, genetics, lifestyle, and fashion culture.

What Areas Can Be Treated with Liposuction?

Liposuction can treat the following areas:

  • Abdomen: Smooth and flatten areas from the ribs to the pubis
  • Hip: Change the shape from a bulge to a gentle curve
  • Thigh: Reduce, reshape, and dramatically change front, inner, and saddlebags
  • Buttock Crease: Restore and create a pleasing fold and reshape your bottom
  • Back: Eliminates or reduces “tissue rolls” on the bra strap area and breast roll for women
  • Armpit: Reduces and tightens tissues of front and back folds, particularly the areas along the front of the armpit above the breast that rarely respond to weight loss
  • Knees: Reduces inner knees, improves shape, and restores a youthful look
  • Pubis: Reduces annoying bulge and makes clothing look good again!
  • Face and Neck: Correct areas of mild laxity and excess volume

Liposuction can also assist in addressing:

  • Previous treatments: Correct irregularities and get pleasing results
  • Weight change: Restore a more youthful shape
  • Genetics: Reshape, sculpt, balance and create the body of your dreams!
  • Age: Restore youthfulness to an aging body

Patients who come in for liposuction often have been struggling to improve their contours naturally, as these pockets of fat are often resistant to even the strictest diet and exercise routines. When excess fat in localized areas is standing in the way of you loving your body completely, liposuction can help you safely and predictably achieve the contours you’ve wanted.

How Should I Prepare for Liposuction?

Preparing for your liposuction procedure involves a few steps, but mostly, you should get excited about your upcoming transformation. In general, you should:

  • Prioritize nutrition and exercise: It can be helpful to prepare balanced, nutritious meals or arrange for a meal delivery service. During recovery, getting optimal nutrition is essential to ensure your body has everything it needs to heal.
  • Plan for help: You may need to arrange childcare, pet care, or help around the house during your immediate recovery. Plan for 3 to 4 days of help with children and household tasks.
  • Medical review: Dr. Rudderman may recommend running routine medical tests to ensure you are healthy enough for surgery. These tests may include routine blood tests, an EKG, or a mammogram.
  • Consider your medication: During your consultation, Dr. Rudderman will review your medications, vitamins, and supplements. You may need to discontinue anything that increases the risk of bleeding or bruising for 2 weeks before and after surgery for example, fish oil, turmeric, garlic, ginseng, vitamin E, Ibuprofen, and any other anti-inflammatory medications. Our staff will provide a more complete list to avoid prior to scheduling your surgery.
  • Quit smoking: Nicotine use negatively impacts healing and can increase your risk of complications. Dr. Rudderman recommends that all patients discontinue nicotine use of any type at least 2 weeks prior to and after surgery to help ensure optimal outcomes and the best possible recovery.
  • Focus on a healthy lifestyle: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is one of the best things you can do to prepare for any surgery. Develop or continue a sustainable exercise routine that will support a stable weight, long-term health, and a higher probability of a smooth recovery.
  • Drink plenty of water: Staying hydrated is essential to your recovery. Drink plenty of water during the days leading up to your surgery to support recovery.
  • Get excited: Liposuction is an investment in your quality of life. Get excited about finally seeing the toned, sculpted physique you’ve been working toward.

How Is Liposuction Surgery in Alpharetta, GA, Performed?

All surgical procedures take place in a fully accredited surgical center with state-of-the-art technology, hospital-level safety standards, and an experienced medical team dedicated to your care. Additionally, Dr. Rudderman takes pride in performing every single aspect of your surgery himself. As you go into surgery, you can feel confident knowing you are being cared for by the most qualified professionals available at every step of the process.

  • Day of Surgery Prep: On the day of your surgery, you will arrive at the surgical center and meet with Dr. Rudderman to review your treatment plan and ask any last-minute questions you may have. He will then mark your body for surgery, and you will meet with a board-certified anesthesiologist.
  • Incisions: When you are sedated and prepped in the surgical suite, Dr. Rudderman will make discreet, strategically placed incisions in the treatment area.
  • Liposuction: Dr. Rudderman will use a small tube called a cannula to loosen and suction out the unwanted fat. Dr. Rudderman resculpts the contour as the fat is removed to help define your desired silhouette.
  • Closing your incisions: After surgery is complete, Dr. Rudderman will close your incisions with sutures, apply a light surgical dressing, and a light compression garment to ease the pressure on your incisions and support your new contours. Dr. Rudderman’s delicate approach to tissue care and suturing helps promote optimal healing of the tissue and incisions.

Most liposuction procedures take 1 to 3 hours and are performed on an outpatient basis. The artistry involved in body contouring procedures like liposuction is specific to each patient, and Dr. Rudderman carefully considers multiple factors, including your anatomy, lifestyle, culture, and fashion preferences. The goal of every surgery is excellent appearance, normal anatomic redistribution, and an outcome that lasts for years and ages appropriately.

What Should I Expect After Liposuction Surgery in Atlanta?

Immediately after surgery, you will be wearing a surgical dressing and a compression garment. As you will have been put under anesthesia, you will need a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for at least 24 hours. Follow-up appointments are essential to ensure you’re healing as expected and are satisfied with your natural, age-appropriate results. In general, you can expect the following during your Atlanta liposuction recovery:

Physical recovery:

  • You can expect mild swelling and some discomfort. Dr. Rudderman will prescribe pain medication, but this should resolve on its own. After 24 to 48 hours, you should be able to manage discomfort with over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen.
  • You will be given a compression garment that you will need to wear for 3 weeks.
  • Swelling is generally mild and resolves on its own in 2 to 3 weeks.
  • Sutures are removed in 7 to 10 days.
  • You will have brown paper tape on the incisions to protect the area and help with minimal scar formation.

Return to normal activities:

  • Most patients can return to desk work in 3 to 4 days. If your job requires physical activity, you may need to take more time off or request modified duties while you recover.
  • Women with children often can return to full childcare within reason in 3 to 4 days, including carpool and driving.
  • Avoid strenuous activity for 7 to 10 days or until Dr. Rudderman has cleared you to do so. Most clients may begin more aggressive physical activity in 4 weeks, including yoga, tennis, swimming, boot camp, or Pilates. We will help guide your return to activity at each post-operative visit.

Post-Surgical Follow-up Visits:

  • You will be seen in the office 48 hours post-surgery and given a more comfortable compression garment.
  • Regular follow-up appointments will generally be scheduled for:
  • One week post-op
    • 2 weeks later (Three weeks post-op)
    • One month later (7-8 weeks post-op)
    • Four months later (6 months post-op)

When Will I See My Liposuction Results in Atlanta, GA?

Most people see liposuction results immediately, though they will be obscured by swelling and bruising at first. It can take up to 2 weeks to see measurable results.

It is important to note that liposuction is not a weight loss procedure. While the fat that was removed during your procedure will not return, your remaining fat cells will still respond to weight fluctuations. Maintaining your weight is an essential part of achieving a great long-term result. It is important to understand that if you gain a significant amount of weight in the future, the weight and fat will be distributed in the areas of your body where fat cells reside. Aging affects changes in body contour and stable weight. Therefore, it is important for you to maintain a healthy lifestyle to enjoy your pleasing, long-lasting results.

Atlanta and Alpharetta Liposuction FAQs

Yes, he performs all his patients’ surgeries. Many surgeons use assistants to suture or perform part of the operations. Dr. Rudderman performs the entire operation on every patient.

Absolutely. Liposuction is often a single aspect of a more comprehensive treatment plan, including almost every body surgery or breast surgery we offer. Dr. Rudderman will take the time to sit down with you and discuss what you would like to address about your appearance and develop a safe, predictable surgical plan to ensure your goals are met and that you get the care and results you deserve.

Technically, yes. You will lose some amount of weight following liposuction. However, liposuction is not a weight loss procedure. Instead, liposuction is used to provide contouring following your weight loss and wellness efforts.

Most women return to desk jobs in about 2 to 3 days. Swelling and mild discomfort are normal for the first 1 to 2 weeks. Light activity can resume within days, while strenuous exercise should be avoided for 3 weeks. We will provide personalized recovery guidelines.

Liposuction cannot prevent aging. If you maintain your weight and exercise, the results will last the longest. However, as you age, you may gradually see fatty deposits in places that previously were not problematic.

Incision scars are carefully placed and typically fade over time. Most patients find that scars become faint and well-hidden in natural contours or under clothing. It is unlikely that you will require any additional scar revision after healing.

You will need to avoid all rigorous, aerobic, and strenuous activities for 7 to 10 days until healing is adequate and Dr. Rudderman tells you it’s okay. Aerobic exercise increases your heart rate and blood pressure and can cause the operated area to swell, delaying your healing. Exercise can be an important part of recovery, and we follow your recovery closely to help you reach your goals.

All surgeries involve some discomfort. Dr. Rudderman is highly skilled and uses advanced techniques and refined instruments that minimize discomfort during his surgical procedures. Many patients will take some pain medications for several days, and often can take Tylenol for relief in 1 to 2 days after surgery.

You will need a responsible adult to drive you to your surgery, stay there, and then drive you home and stay with you overnight after you have had surgery and anesthesia. We will advise you based on your operation as to how long you should request assistance, especially if you have small children or pets. Your follow-up visit will usually be within 48 hours, and you will need to have someone drive you to this appointment and back home.
