Genetics & Lifestyle

Nipple inversion can be present from birth, occur during puberty, following pregnancy and breast feeding, be part of normal aging, occur with weight loss, or be related to trauma or other inflammatory problems of the breast. In America 2% to 3% of women have at least one inverted nipple. An inverted nipple can look flatter, often with a crease in the center, or it may project into the breast instead of out. An inverted nipple can be irritating physically and damaging emotionally…particularly if the other nipple is normal or over projecting and becomes difficult to disguise in clothing. Athletic clothing and swimwear cannot hide inverted nipples. Some women have inverted nipples that look flat on the breast mound; some that are nearly fully inverted and effectively pointing in to the breast. Nipple stimulation, gentle pressure around the nipple base, temperature changes and physical or sexual stimulation all affect inverted nipples of the breast.

Many women suffer much of their lifetime with inverted nipple problems. Because it is not understood…people who should be supportive are often critical & unsupportive of the one who is suffering.

Nipple Inversion Correction Procedure Overview

The degree of nipple inversion is divided into three groups, and based upon your condition, as related to this grading system, Dr. Rudderman will create a treatment plan to specifically address you’re your concerns.

They are:

Grade 1

Mild Inversion describes a nipple that can become everted by stimulation and may remain everted for variable lengths of time. Breast feeding may be possible since the milk ducts may be normal and there is no skin deficit.

Grade 2

Moderate Inversion describes a nipple that can be pulled out or everted with gentle pressure, but it retracts again almost immediately. Breast feeding can be done but is usually difficult.

Grade 3

Severe Inversion involves a nipple that cannot be manually everted (turned out) even with stimulation. Women are rarely able to breast feed and have difficulty maintaining the area free of normal skin oils…often resulting in skin irritation.

Surgical correction for inverted nipples is safe, simple and involves fast recovery. Small incisions are made through which Dr. Rudderman works to release binding tissue and sutures may be used to stabilize the “released” nipple into it’s correct position. Most women can breast feed following surgery (if they were in the mild category) and return to work the next day.

Inverted Nipple Correction.... Related Challenges

Recurrence of inversion (Grade 3) presents challenges due to the tighter banding and shortening of nipple skin/tissue from long standing inversion.

Infections of the breast and tumors can present a rapid change in nipple and/or areolar shape. Any sudden changes should be reported to Dr. Rudderman immediately to rule out these disease processes.

  • Dr. Rudderman and his staff made the experience easy and comfortable. They were realistic communicating surgery expectations, expected pain levels and down time from work. Nurses were informative and friendly and wait times minimal. I also liked the fact that Dr. Rudderman does all his own work and doesn't let other less experienced people do parts of the surgery the way other doctors may. I'm only one week out of the surgery, but I am very satisfied with the results so far.
