Voluma 101: What to Expect With Your Injections

Juvéderm Voluma®  XC is a non-surgical, injectable filler or volumizer—composed of a modified form of hyaluronic acid (HA); hyaluronic acid occurs in nearly every cell of the human body, with 50% of it in the skin. Its function is to absorb water, deliver nutrients, and act as a cushioning agent. When you inject it into your skin, it acts like a sponge and expands to fill in wrinkles and folds and support sunken areas.

Why Should You Consider Voluma®?

As we begin to age, we naturally start to lose collagen, which causes our skin to lose structure and volume. Aging tends to affect the fat pads in our face, particularly in our cheeks. Cheeks begin to lose their prominence and appear more hollow and less supple as the soft tissues of the face descend. Volumizer is an ideal solution when the apple of the cheek flattens out. Injecting the cheek area will not only plump & lift your cheeks but will also provide a lift in your nasolabial folds as well.

Voluma® XC is used to lift and contour areas of the face like the cheeks, jawline, and chin. The “XC” indicates the product contains lidocaine, a numbing agent that allows maximum comfort during your injection appointment.  Voluma® XC is the newest in the FDA-approved line of Juvéderm fillers. The Juvéderm family of fillers is considered one of the best non-surgical cosmetic procedures that can give your face a more youthful appearance.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Your Voluma® injection appointment can take thirty minutes to one hour, with the ultimate time depending upon the area being injected.

When preparing for your injection appointment, do not take Ibuprofen, aspirin, or other blood-thinning agents at least one week prior to your treatment. This will help you avoid bruising.

Be sure to ask your injector for other precautions or recommendations she may suggest.

We strongly recommend scheduling your Voluma® injections with a Board-Certified Surgeon, Nurse Injector or PA in a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon’s office to ensure you are in a safe, clean environment with injectors who have the latest training and many years of experience injecting the face.

Dr. Rudderman’s advice:
You are dealing with the musculature of your face. There are minute facial muscles and blood vessels that are taken into consideration when injecting Voluma®XC and other injectables. You want a highly trained, heavily credentialed injector. Do your research and ask for a consultation prior to getting your injections. You want to be sure you are comfortable with your injector and the office where they work. Ask for before and after photographs. You may have to pay a little more for a highly skilled injector but it’s absolutely worth the peace of mind and beautiful results.
